About This Site

A free phonics handbook for early readers, parents and teachers

What this is

Phonics Handbook for Kids is a free, browser-based phonics programme organised into 13 levels. Each level teaches one decoding skill, gives a memorable rhyme, and provides tappable word cards so children can hear the sound while they see the spelling. It works on any modern phone, tablet or computer — no app, no account, no download required.

Who it is for

Adults do not need to be confident English speakers: every word can be played aloud by the browser, so the child can hear a clear model and repeat it.

How to use it

  1. One level a day, 10–15 minutes. Tap a word to hear it, then ask the child to repeat.
  2. Use the “Play group” button to hear a whole word family in sequence — this is where patterns click.
  3. Tap “I’ve got it” at the end of a level. The progress bar is saved in the browser.
  4. Finish with the 13-question quiz and the graduation checklist, then celebrate.

Short, frequent sessions work far better than one long session. Revisiting an earlier level is encouraged — repetition builds automaticity.

Cost and access

The handbook is free to use. It is funded by the author and, where applicable, by non-personalized advertising. There is no paywall, no subscription and no upsell.

Who made it

Created by an independent parent/educator who wanted a clear, complete phonics sequence that a child could use independently on a phone. The site is maintained as a free community resource.
